The MASTER IN SCRIPTING & PRODUCTION is aimed at training two new professional figures that are currently in great demand: the Writer Producer and the Show Runner, born following the audiovisual product revolution in Streaming and On Demand.

The Writer-Producer

If once a screenwriter was expected to be able to progress a story for two hours, today it is expected that he will be able to do it for duecent hours, in the cases of a very successful series over several seasons. But what is really required of a screenwriter today to be able to write a narrative so dense that it feeds a multi-season TV series?

The professional landscape of anyone involved in audiovisual screenwriting in the last ten years has changed with an unimaginable speed: the ability to access directly Audiovisual Production by professionals has become much more concrete, thanks to the growth of the realities of Netflix, Amazon, Timvision, Google, Apple TV and other international players that are being added. 

All these new broadcasters have an ever-increasing need for products to expand, and this the demand for content has increased exponentially, serial and non, that the Industry asks the Authors directly. The latter today must have an extra capacity, which was not required of an author until a few years ago: that of verbally tell the project to producers and financiers, and therefore to be effective communicators of their own contents, as well as the literary authors of the same. 

The birth of these new ones writer-producers it was a revolution that made the production process faster, and perhaps explains the success of some small audiovisual realities, able to bypass even the big majors, and to export their serial products with great success all over the world, both shot in their original language, and with the transfer of the rights of the format to create versions in other languages.

The show runner

When the television serial narratives were of limited duration, it was the Director, or the Producer, who had the last word in approving the script, the cast, the locations, the costumes, and everything in between, up to the final cut. 

Only at that point, the broadcaster intervened and could ask for any cuts or additions. 

But for at least twenty-five years now, the multiplication of serial productions, which in case of success can even reach many seasons, has prevented the Director and the Producer from taking on the enormous amount of work necessary to follow each episode produced, and have made it necessary to create a professional figure who can follow all phases of the work.

The Show Runner, as well as the Writer-Producer, must have skills in Narration, Screenplay, Casting, Production, Post Production, and Editorial Communication.

The Show Runner is ultimately responsible for all the technical and artistic choices of the production phase of the series.  He must be ready to confront, dialogue, and sometimes to conflict, both with the production and with the broadcaster, in all moments of production, from the presentation of the concept to the end of the mixage of the last episode.

 

If the Writer-Producer is a creator-screenwriter of the series who chooses to produce it directly, the Show Runner is the one entrusted with the vision about to of the project. Sometimes, but less often than you might think, they are the same person.

The Show Runner is the reference point for all those who physically contribute to the realization of the project: it is to him, more than to the director and even to the producer, that everyone will ask what to do, with whom to do it, how to do it, and when to do it.  His ultimate task is to make sure that the substance of what was written in the script is best returned to the Production.

The Show Runner is also a problem solver: must be able to mediate, settle, resolve any kind of artistic and / or production dispute, also keeping an eye on the financial part. This multifunctionality requires first of all a great competence in the writing phase. That's where it all comes from. If it's not on the page, it won't be on the stage.

METHODOLOGY

The course is structured in 60 hours, of which 30 of frontal teaching, and 30 of creative laboratory. The frequency will be in the classroom, therefore, only face-to-face sessions are provided. The student will be able to access the teaching material and will be able to manage and monitor his / her study path through the platform Virtual Academy.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Ai Writer - Producers professionalism is required to be able to respond to the following specificities, which have now established themselves all over the world in the audiovisual market:

1. With which patterns Should the written presentation of a TV series proposal be structured, which may be of interest to the international market? What are the formats, and how should they be structured? 

2. How to prepare a verbal "Pitch", how it is expected to be carried out, in the "Pitchforum", and / or in the meetings with the Producers, both private and "one to one", regarding proposals intended for productions and / or to foreign countries?

3. What are the files graphics to be made to make the presentations of Serial projects more effective?  

4. How should they be designed, and with which audio-visual sources, i mood boards graphs and i trailers audiovisuals of the projects, before the implementation phase? 

5. What exactly is meant by terms now in common use such as: Concept, Premise, Hi-Concept, Exergue, Log-Line, Five-liner, Bible, Blurb, Tag-Line, and that they are indispensable for communicating, all over the world, with Co-Authors, Producers, and Broadcasters?

Lo Show Runner, like and more than the Writer-Producer, he must know how to master the following skills:


1. Knowing how to design, write, format correctly the files needed to present a TV series  on the International Platform Market. Knowing how to make a pitching minutes of the whole project, both in situations one to one, and in the Pitching Forums.

2. Being able to coordinate the development of the idea of ​​the Series, from the Ideation of the Hi-Concept, to then move on to the Screenplay, to the Pre-Production, to the Realization, to the Post Production, up to the broadcast copy of every single episode.

3. Coordinate the Writing Team  of the project, or projects that can be followed at the same time.  

4. Choose, coordinate, guide all the Technical Cast, and contribute to the choice of the Artistic Cast, of which he will have the governance for the entire duration of production.

During the Master, each student will have to carry out the presentation of an original Serial Project, of his own conception, and will have to develop it in the standard writing formats foreseen and used in the Audiovisual Markets. In addition to this, the student will also be able to create a graphic moodboard and an audiovisual trailer, and to study the most suitable public speaking techniques to learn how to make a verbal "pitching" of the project itself.

Thus, at the end of the course, each student will have developed a Presentation of his Serial project, and will be able to tell it verbally, in the various minutes that may be requested by the Broadcasters. The materials that the student will have produced will remain his property.

Meanwhile, Reali writes and directs many critically and publicly awarded TV series, including "An Italian History", "The Price of Life", "The Fourth King", “The Wings of Life" "Last", "The Wrong Man", "We were only a thousand", "The Third Truth", "Beyond the Lake", "Like a Dolphin", "The Scandal of the Roman Bank", "Angels", "Caruso" "Roll up our sleeves" "Story of a good family", all broadcast in prime time on the general-interest channels Raiuno and Canale 5

In addition to being the creator, creator and screenwriter of TV series, Reali is also the author and director of theatrical texts represented in Italy and abroad, and was the winner of the prestigious award Be Bold Award, for the best foreign text on the UK market for his comedy "Physical Jerks ".  

As an educational activity, Reali has taught Screenwriting at the Rai-Script course, at the Amarcord Academy of Bari, at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the Sapienza University of Rome, at the Experimental Center of Cinematography in Milan and Rome, and at the Writing School. of the Luiss University of Rome.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Previous experience in audiovisual script, good knowledge of the Story Structure, and basic Aristotelian rules. A good knowledge of the history of entertainment, theater, cinema and TV is welcome.

2. Excellent knowledge of script writing programs such as Final Draft, Celtx, and the like. Knowledge of writing programs such as Word and the like. Knowledge of graphic programs such as Illustrator and the like is welcome. Knowledge of audio and video editing programs is welcome, but not essential.

3. Previous experiences in scripts also written in team, in audiovisual productions, and in audio-video editing are welcome.

The Admission Process is divided into two steps: the first step consists of a motivational interview and a psycho-aptitude test and is supervised by the admissions officers of the academy. The second step is an evaluation by the teacher in person who examines CV, cover letter and personal presentation video of 2 minutes.
